Andrew Hakin has over twenty five years experience in structural and façade engineering within the residential, commercial and industrial property industry.

He has worked on major projects in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, often with a focus on specialist design and sustainable design. These include bridges, marine works, tensile structures and stadia roofs.

Twelve years of his career was spent with Arup in South Africa and Namibia before running a practice for twelve years with offices in Cape Town and the Seychelles. Andrew then merged his company with WSP Africa before later moving to Sydney where he now runs a small design practice with an international work load.

Andrew's experience in high-rises is mainly in the 20 to 40 story range and incorporates reinforced concrete and composite slab steel framed buildings, with curtain wall façades.

Andrew has assisted the CTUBH in the past by reviewing a working guideline paper on outrigger design for tall buildings and was also on the progressive collapse working group while a member of the council in Cape Town.

A key part of his approach to structural and façade engineering is to keep abreast of the ever changing definition of the possible, and to try to stay open to new ways of achieving safe structures and facades within the development market, while retaining a good grasp on the lessons from historical engineering methods and solutions.
