About

Fazlur R. Khan received his Bachelor of Engineering Degree in 1950 from the University of Dhaka. His education continued in the United States, where he received a Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering in 1952, and both a Master of Science in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Structural Engineering three years later. All of his advanced degrees were from the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois.

He joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP in 1955, and remained with the firm until his death at age 52. He became Senior Designer with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP his first year there, and finally became Partner in 1970.

Dr. Khan had been responsible for the engineering design of many major architectural projects. He had developed a number of new structural systems for tall buildings, both for reinforced concrete and for structural steel. Among many…
