Mr. Jingtang He was born on April 2, 1938, in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. He received his Master's degree in architecture at the South China University of Technology in 1965. He is currently president and chief architect of the Architectural Design and Research Institute at the South China University of Technology as well as a professor and doctoral supervisor. He also serves as the director of the China Architecture Education Expert Association, director of the State Key Lab of Subtropical Building Science Academic Committee, and the Commissary of Ninth and Tenth CPPCC.
He has long been engaged in architectural design, teaching, and research; pioneered the “Two Perspectives and Three Properties“ theory of architecture, which entails a design philosophy that gives due consideration for Chinese culture/context; and explored the idea of a development approach complimented by extensive research and innovation. He Jingtang presided over the designs of a large number of highly acclaimed works, which have had great influence in China and abroad, winning nearly 200 prizes for outstanding designs on the national and provincial level. Also, he’s published over 50 academic papers in Architectural Journal, and mentored over 75 doctoral and post-doctoral students.
He is particularly specialized in designing cultural buildings, exhibition spaces, and campus plans. Mr. He has presided over numerous important projects, such as the 2010 Expo China Pavilion, the extension of the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, Tianjin Museum, Yingxiu Epicenter Memorial, Library of Xuesen Qian, Museum of Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum, 731 Museum, Zhejiang University Jingang Campus, and the new campus for University of Macau in Hengqin.
Mr. He was awarded the title of “Master of China Engineering Design “in 1994, and was elected to be a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Since 2001, he has won the "Sicheng Liang Architecture Prize," "Top Ten Influential Professional Leader Prize," "International Design Arts Lifetime Achievement Award," "Chinese Academy of Engineering Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award," and "Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Contribution." Finally, during the 60th anniversary of the Architectural Creation Awards, held by the Architectural Society of China, he was recognized as the “most award-winning architect” after the founding of new China for his 13 awarded projects.
