Julie Michiels is an Senior Associate Principal at SOM, where she leads the firm's interdisciplinary and holistic Interior Design practice. Her approach to human-centered design greatly contributes to SOM's global portfolio, working on projects from Chicago and Boston, to Melbourne and Manila.

Julie calls on her extensive experience as an architect, interior designer, and project leader to guide complex project teams focused on developing innovative design solutions tailored to the needs of the client. With a dedicated focus on client service, collaboration, and designing from the inside out, she has been involved in several award-winning projects—diverse in scale, location, and typology—from concept to completion.

Julie's success as a designer and practice leader stems from her desire to interweave her own experience and design expertise alongside clients’ visions and goals. Trained as an architect, she has worked across a wide variety of scales, typologies, and locations. Julie believes that interesting design opportunities open up when there is room for cross pollination between various disciplines and points of view.
