Katherine Grenier graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1978. Since 2004 she has been the chief of design and construction planning for the recently completed renovation of United Nations Headquarters in New York. A UN staff member since 1995, she also managed the study and preliminary phase of what became the capital master plan for the $2 billion modernization of the iconic campus. Her previous experience included a similar role with the New York State Facilities Development Corporation, managing the development of a long term capital plan for psychiatric facilities across the state, as well as managing the design of renovation and new construction projects for New York State agencies.

In private practice, she was an architect with Slomanson Smith & Barresi in New York, working on a range of commercial and institutional projects from branch banks to research facilities. In Chicago, she worked with the non-profit Chicago Architectural Assistance Center both as a volunteer and as a project manager.
