An architect by training and practice, Mr. Clawson’s career is characterized by involvement in the interdisciplinary aspects of buildings, particularly the design and construction of tall buildings. Those interests and skills are utilized at Aon Fire Protection in assisting clients resolve problems with egress, passive and active fire protection, and code issues, including accessibility compliance; for projects which have included the United States, the Middle East, Asia, and South America.

He is the Chairman of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, and previously served as Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Program Director of that organization. In 2005 he co-chaired and organized a full day seminar (held at the Sears Tower in Chicago) on recent developments in high rise fire and life safety. In 2011 he co-chaired a seminar on building movement of tall buildings, and a symposium on architecture and urbanism in China. In 2012 he co-chaired a seminar on internal air pressure in tall buildings, which was repeated at the 2013 national convention of the American Institute of Architects.

He is also the Vice Chairman of the Fire and Life Safety Group of the City of Chicago, Mayor’s Building Code Initiative. His involvement in professional organizations also includes the American Institute of Architects, the Construction Specifications Institute, the International Code Council, the National Fire Protection Association, the U.S. Green Building Council, and he is an associate member of ASHRAE.

His professional career began with Harry Weese and Associates, where he eventually became a Vice President. During that time he was involved in the design and construction of a number of built and un-built tall buildings, including mixed use projects of 2,000 and 2,500 feet (610 and 762 meters). He was with OWP/P Architects for a decade, and was involved in the design and construction of many of the tallest buildings in the history of that firm, including residential towers of 39 and 59 stories. As Director of Production at Goettsch Partners, his responsibilities included QA\QC reviews at all phases of the work of the firm. Among the numerous projects are many tall buildings in the United States, the Middle East and China; including Sowwah Square in Abu Dhabi, which was the winner of the CTBUH Award for the 2013 Best Tall Building Middle and Africa.

Mr. Clawson received his B.S. in Architectural Studies from the University of Nebraska, and was the recipient of the College of Architecture Faculty Award for Scholastic Achievement. He is a frequent participant in design juries and reviews at various schools and colleges of architecture, and has given numerous lectures and presentations on the planning, design and construction of tall buildings. In 2011 the Tau Sigma Delta National Honor Society in Architecture and the Allied Arts awarded him a Silver Medal for a record of distinction in leadership in the field of architecture.
