Klaus Kastbjerg is the chief executive officer of Union Holding A/S. After starting a design firm in 1974, he graduated from the Copenhagen Business School in 1978. Beginning in the mid-1980s, he began buying properties around Copenhagen, focusing on older industrial buildings in waterfront districts that showed potential for transformation. These include The Silo, a conversion of a grain silo into a residential building, and THEKRANE, a private retreat, spa and meeting room in the control cab of a former coal crane.

“I have always had a soft spot for vacant buildings and sites where you find more pigeons than human beings,” Kastbjerg says. “It is very often the case that old industrial buildings are in desperate need of restoration. I have been so fortunate to work with extremely competent people to restore and transform these buildings.”
