About
Mark is a Director of Structural Engineering at CH2M Hill, specialising in tall buildings design and has lead teams that have delivered high-rise projects in the City of London and in the Far East.
In London, Mark was the structural engineer leading a team for the design and delivery of Heron Tower, which is a 230m speculative office building configured to allow segmentation of rental office dwellings three storey ‘villages’. The engineering for the stability was based on a tube form, derived to also reflect the three storey language of the north facing building elevation.
More recently, Mark has lead teams of structural engineers designing tall residential towers for developers in Greenwich, and in North east of London.
Mark’s career has not been exclusively dedicated to tall building design. Through his early career his focus was long span structures for aircraft facilities and was the lead structural engineer for military and civilian aircraft hangars.
Through academic work towards a PhD, Mark studied the dynamic characteristics of structures ranging from whole complete buildings to their elements and components. The focus of the work was to understand the changes that occur to dynamics through service limits through to ultimate capacity. This work involved comprehensive data collection from real structures through loading to destruction, with vibration testing carried out in tandem. Mathematical models of the observed behavior was then formulated adopting non-linear damping terms within the differential equation of vibration motion to achieve a match to the measured characteristics.
Recently, Mark has been appointed Fellow to London South Bank University, where he intends to share his approach to engineering, and offer guidance to students looking to develop within structural engineering. It is an opportunity to offer support to students as they step from academic life into industry, sharing opinions on the industry and helping establish routes for their career realizing their potential. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK.
Mark has worked with a wide client base, and has had many roles including leading teams, taking client-side advisory roles and expert witness work. An example of the clients that he has worked with are:
- Heron International
- Skylan (Parc 1, Seoul, Korea).
- Sellar Properties.
- Lloyds Bank.
- Siemens.
- Defense Aviation Research Agency.
- Guys and St Thomas Hospital.
- BAA
- Land Securities.
