About
Nancy is a Structural Engineer and a leader of integrated design and engineering teams. She is the CEO and Founder of Be Integrated, a consulting business focused on developing integrated engineering solutions for complex buildings. She was previously a Senior VP and Board Member at HOK where she was Firm-wide Director of Engineering, and prior to that was with Arup for 24 years as a Principal and the founder of the Arup Chicago Office and she was Arup’s Americas’ Aviation Business Leader.
Nancy’s career has been focused on complex buildings and how to create truly integrated high performance projects. Her projects have typically been unique, complex, high profile, award-winning and sustainable projects. Nancy has been involved in some of the world’s tallest towers, including the post-fire forensic evaluation and concept design for the Ostankino Communication Tower in Moscow and led the engineering of the Air Traffic Control Tower in Jeddah. She also brings experience in pioneering unique structural systems, such as the iconic and unique interlacing ribbon structure for the high seismic Kunming Airport Terminal. She has also been a leader in sustainable design, responsible for the engineering leadership on such sustainable ground breakers and she has been responsible for the engineering of over $30 billion in projects in her career.
She started her career on the 40 story KOIN tower in Portland in 1981 while with KPFF Engineers. In 1987, she joined Arup in Los Angeles, where she was part of the core team that built that office. She became a seismic expert, and in 1994 was appointed by the California Governor to the committee charged with investigating and solving the steel moment frame problems after the Northridge Earthquake. In 1996, Nancy moved to New York to lead the firm’s JFK work. On 9-11, she was in the first group of engineers on site the following day for the search, recovery and cleanup. She was also selected as one of 4 people to set the process and standards for the rapid evaluation of buildings, many of them high rise, in Lower Manhattan for full building assessments following the impacts of the WTC collapse. Her efforts allowed Lower Manhattan to get back to work quickly. In 2003, she was sent to Chicago to open the Arup office there, and developed the structural and integrated engineering approach for high rises such as Solstice on the Park, a high performance LEED Platinum residential high rise.
Nancy lectures on creating and delivering Integrated Design and Engineering solutions.
Nancy has a Masters from MIT, and an undergraduate ARCE degree with highest honors from Cal Poly SLO. She is a licensed Structural engineer in 20 states. She has served on university Advisory councils for Cal Poly SLO and for IIT. She was recognized in Who’s Who’s 2000 Notable American Women. She co-authored papers on high rise engineering, and has been a contributing author for numerous papers.
