Born in İstanbul in 1933, Semih completed his engineering degrees at the Technical University of Istanbul, M. Sc. in 1954 and Ph. D. in 1960. He has been active in teaching and research for more than fifty years, having first joined the University of British Columbia in Canada in 1961.
He continued his career at the American Robert College, later Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, in 1971. Dr. Tezcan served as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, as the founding Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, as the Director of the Computer Center and as President of the University.
Dr. Tezcan spent several years as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley and also at the State University of New York, Buffalo.
Dr. Tezcan is the author of seven books, 93 research reports and 381 scientific papers published in international journals on environmental, civil and structural engineering. Dr. Tezcan’s innovative "code number technique" is an indispensible tool in computer programming and virtually caused a skyrocketing impact on the use of computers in structural engineering.
Dr. Tezcan received a number of awards for his scientific achievements including the Soconi-Vakum award at Istanbul Technical University, the McNeal Award at Robert College, the Gzowski Gold Medal from the Association of Professional Engineers in Ottawa, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Association of Precast Concrete Producers in Turkey, the Best Paper award from the Dental Faculty University of Istanbul in 1995 and the Appreciation award from the Turkish Union of Contractors and Suppliers.
He is still actively engaged in civil, structural and earthquake engineering research and consulting.
