Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Schmid is head of the Chair for Composite and Hybrid Structures at the Technische Universität Berlin with a special knowledge in multistory timber structures.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Schmid worked three years as a structural designer of bridges and buildings in München, Germany, before he became research assistant at Prof. Jörg Schlaich’s Institute for Structural Design II in Stuttgart, Germany. In 2000 he got his PhD degree for the thesis: High performance saw-tooth connections between steel and concrete. He was working six years for Arup in London and two years in Berlin, leading the structural design of award winning and high profile building structures in Europe and the US. He was project manager for the structural design of the 150 m long and 28 m high free-formed timber structure Metropol Parasol in Seville.
