Julian Chen is an architect and urban planner specializes in the design and execution of tall buildings and high density master plans. Julian has profound experience in working with international teams on projects in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is a leader in high-rise and complex projects at Henning Larsen Architects, a global Danish architectural practice based in Copenhagen. In Denmark, Julian plays an significant role in the dissemination of knowledge in tall building design; he is an active proponent of vertical urbanism that embraces the public realm.

About Julian Chen

Julian Chen is an architect and urban planner specializes in the design and execution of tall buildings and high density master plans. Julian has profound experience in working with international teams on projects in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is a leader in high-rise and complex projects at Henning Larsen Architects, a global Danish architectural practice based in Copenhagen. In Denmark, Julian plays an significant role in the dissemination of knowledge in tall building design; he is an active proponent of vertical urbanism that embraces the public realm.

Julian received a Master of Architecture from the Urban Architecture Laboratory at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. Upon completion of his studies in 2003, Julian relocated to London to work for Richard Rogers Partnership where he worked on a number of high-profile projects in Europe. In London, Julian was exposed to the latest thinking and technology in tall building design and construction; he had subsequently developed a passion for this area in architecture.

His work in tall buildings and master planning continued in Copenhagen where he began his employment at Henning Larsen Architects in 2007. Julian was responsible for the concept of Carlsberg master plan in Copenhagen which achieved 2nd prize in an open international competition that attracted more than 500 entries from around the world. He had also contributed in the competition proposal for the 1 kilometer tall Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Julian was a key contributor in the design and execution of the Crystal Towers, one of the very few contemporary stone-clad tall buildings in the world, located in the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Recently, he has been involved in the design and execution of Nordea Bank in Copenhagen which will house the largest trading floor in Scandinavia.

Julian has a keen interest in commercial developments and embraces information driven design that marries market intelligence with social-cultural and environmental aspirations. He has recently contributed in a special feature in Politiken, a leading Danish newspaper, on the topic of tall building developments in Denmark.
