Randolph Wang is a Registered Professional Planner and a senior urban designer with the Planning and Growth Management Department of the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Randolph has extensive experience in downtown and mainstreet revitalization, waterfront redevelopment, transit-oriented development, public realm improvements, infill, as well as new town and suburban design.
His current practice at the City of Ottawa has included development review and policy development. He has helped with the urban design review of many recent high-rise development projects in Ottawa, including participation in the City’s Urban Design Review Panel process. He has involved in the preparation and review of some of the City’s urban design policy documents and guidelines, and is a lead urban designer of a number of community planning and urban design studies, including the Bayview/Somerset Area Secondary Planning Study, Preston-Carling District Secondary Plan and the Public Realm and Mobility Study.
Randolph has also participated in projects and programs that aim at promoting and facilitating public and professional discourses on urbanism and urban design. His is a member of the Urban Forum organizing group, and has helped with the advancement of the urban design lecture of the City of Ottawa’ Planning Primer courses. He is a frequent urban design critic engaged in the review of student works at local colleges.
During his tenure as a senior planner at the Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute in the 1990s, Randolph completed a number of high-profile planning and urban design studies that contributed to the transformation of that city. These include the redevelopment plans for the South Bund, North Bund, and the North Sichuan Road areas, the urban design plans for the West Nanjing Road and the People’s Square areas, and the detailed plan that led to the construction of the East Nanjing Road pedestrian mall. He also participated in the international urban design consultation for the redevelopment of the Lujiazui area in the early 1990s.
Randolph holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (major in urban planning) from Tongji Univerisity in Shanghai and a Master of City Planning Degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
