Raul Manlapig is a Principal of Ove Arup & Partners HK Ltd. He is the geographic leader responsible in managing and promoting the Arup business in the Philippines. Arup is one of the leading engineering consulting firms in the world and is a pioneer in designing sustainable buildings, addressing energy and resource conservation as well as social value and environmental consequences of urban development.

Raul leads a multi-disciplinary design group that provides specialist seismic, structural, geotechnical engineering, building services design and project management services.

He is a practicing structural engineer specializing in tall building design, seismic risk assessment and retrofit design. He has been involved in the structural design of tall buildings for the past 18 years. Recent projects he has been involved with in a Project Director capacity include the 60 storey Grand Hyatt Residences, the 60 storey Hyundai The Block, and the St Francis Shangri-la Place, a twin tower 60 storey condominium. These projects are designed using a performance based approach and are unique in that it uses the patented Arup Damped Outrigger System in resisting wind and seismic effects on the building. Arup advocates the use of a performance based design approach due to the resulting predictability of building behaviour and the material savings which in turn results in less embodied energy that is used in building tall structures.

He has been extensively involved in seismic evaluation of existing buildings in regions of high seismicity and has developed retrofit for many structures to allow it to perform better during seismic events. His structural evaluation work has taken him to countries such as Japan, Turkey, USA, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, etc. He was a member of the EEFIT Mission to assess the damages and the impact of Tsunami in the Sumatra Earthquake in December 2004 and together with the EEFIT Team publshed its mission findings entitled “The Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004: Mission Findings in Sri Lanka and Thailand”. He was also involved in the Arup seismic hazard assessment of the East Manila Area.
