Mark Thompson, Ph.D., is Senior Director the Otis Program Office at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC). In this strategic leadership role, he oversees the planning and implementation of innovations and technologies for Otis Elevator… ushering the most advanced elevators, escalators and moving walkways into the marketplace. In addition, Thompson manages several projects within the Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) on which UTRC collaborates with government agency, university and corporate partners.
In 1982, Thompson began his UTC career as a Research Engineer at UTRC, and since then has worked for the corporation in a variety of technical and leadership positions. In 2005, he joined Otis Engineering, where he served in Global Segment Manager roles in Materials Engineering, Doors and Coated Steel Belts. In 2012, he returned to UTRC in his current role.
Thompson is a recipient of the Otis President’s Award, UTC Horner Citation and a number of UTRC Outstanding Achievement Awards. He holds 10 patents, with 15 pending, and has 12 publications in journals of metallurgical sciences to his credit. His community engagement includes involvement in Sharing, Inc., Appalachian Service Project, Habitat for Humanity and UTRC chairman, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut.
Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, and master’s and Ph.D. degrees in materials science and engineering from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut.
