Matthew Wright joined FPA Australia in October 2010 in the position of Chief Technical Officer to co-ordinate and develop the Associations technical involvement across legislation, codes, standards and other related technical activities nationally.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Technology in Building Surveying and has held Building Surveying positions in local government and leading private practices. This building surveying background has provided Matthew with exposure to a broad spectrum of building types including, domestic, residential, commercial, industrial and healthcare and application of various technical requirements. Matthew is a registered building practitioner in the Building Surveyor-Unlimited category in the state of Victoria.

Immediately before joining FPA Australia, Matthew spent six years at the Country Fire Authority (fire brigade) where he was responsible for structural fire safety matters associated with the built environment based at CFA Headquarters. Matthew’s position at CFA allowed him to focus on fire safety interests and provided access to key industry stakeholders. During this time he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Performance-Based Building and Fire Codes and Graduate Diploma in Building Fire Safety and Risk Engineering.

In 2009 Matthew accepted a Ministerial appointment to the Building Appeals Board in Victoria, an independent statutory body established by the Building Act 1993 to hear appeals, disputes and provide determinations regarding application of the Victorian Building Act and Regulations, ultimately serving for two terms totalling almost 6 years.

Matthew’s title was amended to also include Deputy CEO of FPA Australia early in 2012 and in June 2014 he was accepted as FPA Australia’s representative on the Building Codes Committee that assists the government sanctioned Australian Building Codes Board develop the Building Code of Australia that is adopted nationally.

Championing fire protection to improve fire safety outcomes has been a hallmark of Matthew’s professional career and his advocacy work with a diverse range of stakeholders locally and internationally has influenced policy and practice improving life, property and environment protection outcomes.
