About Rene Lagos

René Lagos is the Founder and Chairman of Rene Lagos Engineers, a privately held structural engineering firm in Chile. With 38+ years of experience, René is recognized as a leader in structural engineering consultancy in South America, with important projects in high risk seismic countries worldwide.

Mr. René Lagos has been the principal structural engineer of more than 1,500 projects, representing over 12,000,000 m2, ranging from mid-level buildings to 64 stories (with over 100 projects at 20 stories or more). The work covers a full range of building structures, including complexes of affordable housing.

About Rene Lagos

René Lagos is the Founder and Chairman of Rene Lagos Engineers, a privately held structural engineering firm in Chile. With 38+ years of experience, René is recognized as a leader in structural engineering consultancy in South America, with important projects in high risk seismic countries worldwide.

Mr. René Lagos has been the principal structural engineer of more than 1,500 projects, representing over 12,000,000 m2, ranging from mid-level buildings to 64 stories (with over 100 projects at 20 stories or more). The work covers a full range of building structures, including complexes of affordable housing.

The most prominent of these projects are located in high-risk seismic zones, such as: Torre Costanera in Chile (300m), the tallest building in South America; the Tower Atacama Solar Plant in Chile (250m), the world’s tallest concentrated solar power tower; Sky Fort Tower (202m), the tallest in Bulgaria; the Swiss Tower (190m), tallest in Ecuador, Milenia Tower (140m), the tallest in Peru; and Ñuñoa Capital Tower (90m), the tallest residential building with seismic base isolation in the Americas.

René has gained international respect for his expertise, realizing the aspirations of architects to build tall in challenging environments.

René holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Chile in Santiago. He has been a visiting Expert Professor, teaching structural analysis and seismic design of concrete building courses, and has acted as Guiding Professor for many student theses in Structural Engineering. In Chile, he is a member of several organizations related to structural engineering and construction technologies, and a member of the committee in charge of the Chilean seismic building standards. Mr. Lagos has received prestigious awards and recognition for his contributions in promoting the Chilean seismic engineering practice to the world.

Currently, Rene Lagos Engineers has projects in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, United States, Bulgaria, Rumania, United Arab Emirates and China.

René has been invited as the prominent speaker in conferences worldwide. As a member of the CTBUH for more than a decade, Rene has participated in co-authoring publications and been a part of technical committees, in addition to speaking at the CTBUH World Congress. René is keen to share the South American experience to the CTBUH worldwide community, and contribute to the worldwide recognition of local seismic design practices.
